The record number of 1,72,208 students — 78940 boys and 93268 girls — secured GPA 5 this year against only 46,942 last year.

A total of 16,75,109 out of 18,62,380 examinees came out successful this time, up by about 2.97 percent higher (73,359) from the previous year.

Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid formally announced the results at a crowed press conference at his ministry on Sunday noon.

The results also showed improvement in other indicators this year.

The number of institutions with cent percent pass rate increased to 4,997 from last year’s 4899 while that of institutions with zero success rate came down to 57 from 85 of last year.

Earlier, the minister handed over the results to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official residence Ganabhaban at about 10 am.

The Prime Minister then announced the results.

As many as 90.25 percent of the 8,79,151 male students passed the examination, while 89.67 percent of the 983229 female students became successful.

Some 13,89,313 students out of 15,48,700 out of 18,62,380 examinees under the eight general education boards qualified the JSC examination with 89.71 percent pass rate, while 2,85,796 students out of 3,13,680 examinees under the Madrasha Education Board passed the JDC examination with 91.11 percent pass rate.

In 2012, some 16,01750 students passed the exams with 86.97 success rate.

Viqarunnisa Noon School stood first among the most successful institutions across the country, while Ideal School and College and Rajuk Uttara Model School and College occupied the second and the third places.

Addressing the conference, the minister said a significant number of students achieved GPA 5 this year due to inclusion of fresh additional subject in the curriculum.

This year the students sat for the JSC and JDC examinations amid the worst political turmoil in Bangladesh history, the minister added. Even then the results could be published within a short time due to hard work by teachers and officials of the boards.

The students appeared at the examinations in the face of huge pressure as the schedules of the examinations were changed repeatedly due to frequent hartals and blockades enforced by the opposition, Nahid added.

The minister said new textbooks for 2014 will be distributed among the students across the country on January 2 amid the book festival as the first day of the 2014 calendar year is a holiday.

However, the results of a JSC expatriate centre at Tripoli, Libya were not published as the examination papers reached the Dhaka late. Ten students sat for the examination from the centre.
