A group of Jatiya Party leaders on Wednesday gave a 48-hour ultimatum to party chairman Ghulam Muhammed Quader and general secretary Mujibul Haque Chunnu, asking them to resign from their positions.
They warned that if the chairman and general secretary of the party failed to resign, they would be removed and new leadership would be selected through a council session.
When they tried to enter the office, the police stopped them.
Later, the party leaders held a press conference in front of the office.
Sahidur read out a written statement at the press conference.
In the statement, he said, ‘We hoped that the chairman and secretary general of the party would resign and save their honour by taking responsibility for throwing the Jatiya Party into such a disaster and causing a humiliating defeat in the January 7 general election. But they didn’t realise that either. We got to know the attitude of the leaders and workers at all levels of the party. They want party chairman GM Quader and general secretary Mujibul Haque Chunnu to be removed from their posts.’
He further said that GM Quader and Chunnu should resign from their posts within the next 48 hours to save the party and maintain the unity of the party.
‘Thereafter they shall be deemed to have been removed from their posts. At this stage, the central executive committee of the party will be formed through the national council by appointing an acting or executive chairman and acting general secretary in the party,’ he said.
Talking about top leaders including the chairman of the party, Babla said, ‘We have heard that they have taken money. We will investigate it properly and take action. If the party is not right, then whether I have got a seat or not, that is not a question.’
Asked about protest of many JP people in front of the party chairman’s office at the city’s Banani, GM Quader said, ‘Some people are staging this protest to raise questions against the party and to malign our image.’
‘What was done regarding participating in the election was done through discussing it with all leaders of the party. You know everything does not happen the same way all the time,’ GM Quader added.
