Joy’s late appointment mysterious

At a discussion on Friday, the party’s standing committee member Barrister Rafiqul Islam Miah said, “Joy is the son of my close friend Dr Wazed Miah. I don’t want to say anything about him. But I would like to say something about the circular regarding his appointment.”

“Joy has been the prime minister’s advisor since she assumed office. No circular was issued then. Why did it become necessary to issue it now? What’s the mystery behind it? The government must answer this.”

The Prime Minister’s Office in a Nov 17 circular, published Thursday, announced IT professional Joy’s appointment as an honorary part-time ICT advisor to his mother.

It said he would carry out his duties on the prime minister’s orders.

Joy, who lives in the US, had been working as the Awami League chief’s ICT adviser. He has steered programmes promoting the ruling party’s ‘Digital Bangladesh’ vision.

Rafiqul Islam Miah said, “After (former) Minister Abdul Latif Siddique said in New York that Joy gets a salary of $200,000, our (BNP) acting secretary general had sought explanation from the government.”

“The circular has been issued after that. I would like to know why it was not issued earlier.”

He said Khaleda Zia, when she was prime minister during BNP’s 1991-96 term, had rejected a proposal to sack Wazed Miah as the chairman of Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission.

The BNP chief does not believe in vengeance, Rafiqul added.

The senior BNP leader alleged that, on the other hand, Hasina’s government had filed false cases against Khaleda and her son Tarique Rahman.
