Police on Wednesday honoured Jharna Begum, the woman who had rushed to the aid of a Sub Inspector subjected to a brutal attack by the Islami Chhatra Shibir.
Inspector General of Police Hassan Mahmud Khandaker handed over a crest and certificate to Jharna Begum at the police headquarters in Dhaka. Top police officers were present during the ceremony.
“A blow to an on-duty policeman is equal to a blow on the state. We have a lot to learn from Jharna Begum,” IGP Hassan Mahmud said.
On Apr 1, Boalia Police Station SI Jahangir Alam was brutally beaten up by some Shibir activists in Rajshahi’s Shalbagan area. The Shibir is the student affiliate of the Jamaat-e-Islami.
Jharna Begum was among the few who helped rush SI Jahangir to hospital.
The IG remarked her courage was exemplary and praised her effort. He called upon all to stand by the side of police. “This is our duty as citizens.”
Jharna Begum said all would have to come forward in times of need. “Men, women, everyone has to protest against wrongdoings.”
Earlier, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police honoured Jharna Begum for her efforts.
