Assistant Sub-Inspector Haider is being taken on a helicopter to Dhaka after alleged BNP activists beat him up mercilessly at Bagharpara upazila of Jessore during the opposition-sponsored hartal on Tuesday.
Alleged activists of main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) thrashed the head of a policeman and injured two of his colleagues in Bagharpara upazila of Jessore during countrywide Tuesday’s shutdown.
Severely injured Haidar (full name could not be learnt immediately), an assistant sub-inspector (ASI) of Bagharpara police, was flown to Combined Military Hospital (CMH) in Dhaka, Director of Rab’s legal and media wing Commander Habibur Rahman told The Daily Star.
Two BNP activists and a pedestrian also sustained injuries during the 30-minute clash that ensued around 10:30am at Bhatar-Amtala in the upazila, according to Jahangir, a town sub-inspector (TSI) of Bagharpara Police Station.
Police said Haidar was first admitted to Jessore Medical College Hospital (JMCH), our Jessore correspondent reported.
As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Dhaka, the TSI said.
Around 50 to 60 BNP men put barricades on the Jessore-Magura highway in Bhatar-Amtala area in the upazila in support of the shutdown.
As a team of about 15 police tried to resist the pickets, they encompassed the policemen and then started to beat them indiscriminately with sticks and brick chips, a police constable from the team told The Daily Star.
The activists thrashed the head of Haidar with sticks after he collapsed on the ground, the cop said.
Ramprasad Bakta, officer-in-charge of Bagharpara Police Station, and Sub-inspector Nafizur Rahman were also injured during the attack.
