Jatiya Party not in election race: GM Quader

Dispelling the confusion about its election stance, Jatiya Party presidium member GM Quader on Friday said their party is not there in the January-5 10th parliament election race.

“We’ve applied for the withdrawal of nomination papers to stay away from the election. But our applications have not been accepted citing technical reasons. Even then we’re not in the election race,” he said.

Quader, also the younger brother of Jatiya Party chairman HM Ershad, came up with the remarks at a press briefing at his Uttara residence as some party leaders were confusing people about the party’s participation in the polls.

Making his stance clear over his position in the election-time government, the Jatiya Party leader said he is no longer a minister as he has already resigned from the cabinet.

“I don’t use the flag neither in my vehicle nor at my house. I no longer avail myself of any ministerial facility. It’s now the responsibility of the government to publish a gazette notification in this regard,” he added.

Referring to misleading information given by some party leaders about the Jatiya Party’s participation in the polls and in the interim cabinet, Quader said as their party chairman Ershad cannot directly talk to the media, its secretary general Ruhul Amin Howlader and he himself are informing the press about the directions of the party chief.

“If anybody (except Howlader and Quader) says anything refereeing to him (Ershad) would not be his direction. He (Ershad) is still firm on his decision of not joining the polls,” he said.

Quader held the press briefing apparently to make the party’s stance clear in the wake of party presidium member Kazi Firoz Rashid’s remarks that Jatiya Party is going to polls under the leadership of Raushan Ershad at the behest of the party chairman.

Firoz Rashid made the remarks on Thursday while conducting electioneering at Lalkuthi in the city’s Farashganj area.
