JaPa alleged that during Zia’s regime, many patriotic army officers and freedom fighters were executed and 17 military coup attempts took place
Jatiya Party Secretary General Ziauddin Ahmed Bablu yesterday condemned the recent remarks of BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and urged the party’s chairperson Khaleda Zia to apologise to the nation.
In a statement, Bablu noted that Ershad came to power following an invitation from an elected president through martial law, whereas Ziaur Rahman grabbed state power after the assassination of Bangabandhu and his family on August 15, 1975.
The statement alleged that during Zia’s regime, many patriotic army officers and freedom fighters were executed and 17 military coup attempts took place.
Mirza Fakhrul had asked JaPa Chairman HM Ershad to apologise for making false claims regarding Zia.
“In an open letter published in a newspaper, Ershad said Ziaur Rahman assumed office using a bloody path. Ziaur Rahman did not occupy power; rather he was given the charge to govern the country through a military-civil revolution,” said Fakhrul.
Fakhrul said: “Ershad should apologise before the nation…Ershad is the main culprit of the present polluted image of politics.”
