Jamaat, Shibir men attack cops in capital

A Shibir activist hits a policeman at New Market in the capital on Monday.

Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing, Islami Chhatra Shibir, clashed with police in New Market area in the capital demanding immediate release of their leaders.
The protesters vandalised several vehicles during the clash. Police picked up three suspected Shibir men by raiding the area following the clash.
The clash ensued around 2:10pm when police intercepted a procession of over 20 leaders and activists of Jamaat, a key partner in the BNP-led 18-party opposition alliance.
Police fired rubber bullets and lobbed teargas shells to disperse the opposition activists who retaliated by hurling brick chips, Arafat Alam, officer-in-charge of New Market Police Station, told The Daily Star.
Jamaat observed a countrywide agitation programme on Monday to press home their demand.
