Jamaat-e-Islami, a key constituent of the BNP-led 18-Party alliance, has rejected the Prime Minister’s call for an all-party interim government to conduct the upcoming national election.
Sheikh Hasina gave the proposal in her address to the nation on Friday. She also called upon the opposition to select their representatives and name them for joining the interim government.
The BNP, however, said it would react on the proposal on Saturday.
Jamaat’s Acting Secretary General Rafiqul Islam Khan in a press release said, “The Prime Minister’s address is confusing and the nation has rejected it.”
“The speech had nothing but empty talks. This is not acceptable to the nation,” he said.
Khan said the Prime Minister gave the proposal in a bid to foil the movement demanding for a caretaker government to conduct the polls.
“Ninety percent of the people want a free and fair election under the caretaker government. There is no alternative to that.”
The Jamaat leader urged the government to step down before Oct 24 by dissolving Parliament and restoring the caretaker government system.
The Prime Minister’s address has sinister motive, said Khan, leader of the party that is facing investigation for its crimes against humanity during 1971 Liberation War.
