Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Sunday called a countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal for Monday protesting what it said the government’s plot to annihilate the party and demanding immediate release of its former ameer Ghulam Azam.
A few hours after the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 set Monday for delivering its verdict in the trial its former ameer Ghulam Azam, Jamaat acting secretary general Moulana Rafiqul Islam Khan announced the shutdown programme through a press statement.
“I’m announcing the daylong countrywide hartal for July 15 (Monday) protesting the government conspiracy and demanding Ghulam Azam’s release,” he said in the statement.
Rafiq also said his party was forced to announce the hartal in the month of Ramadan though it will cause sufferings to people to resist the government’s plot to unjustifiably killing of people.
Jamaat had also enforced hartal on the days the tribunals pronounced verdict against its leaders Quader Molla, Delwar Hossain Sayedee and Muhammad Kamaruzzaman.
Earlier in the day, the International Crimes Tribunal-1 said it will deliver its judgment on Monday on the trial of the crimes against humanity allegedly perpetrated by Ghulam Azam during the 1971 Liberation War.
Justice ATM Fazle Kabir, chairman of the three-member tribunal, flanked by the two other members Justice Jahangir Hossain and Justice Anwarul Haque, passed the order as it came up on the cause list.
Meanwhile, Jamaat-Shibir men on went on mayhem in the city’s different areas following the ICT-1 announced that it would deliver its judgment in Ghulam Azam’s case on Monday.
Witnesses said 10-15 Jamaat–Shibir activists carried out an attack on a microbus carrying police personnel near Kosturi Hotel in Paltan area around about 2 pm, leaving four policemen injured.
The unruly Jamaat-Shibir men also torched a microbus and a motorbike in the area.
They also brought out violent processions in different parts of the city and clashed with law enforcers.
