Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman on Monday pledged that his party would stand by the people as a responsible opposition in parliament, promising cooperation with the government on national issues while acting firmly to protect public interest.

“Various state institutions had weakened over time. If the government takes sincere initiatives, it will be possible to reactivate institutions that have become ineffective,” he said at a meeting with the party’s MPs-elect at Al-Falah auditorium in Moghbazar, Dhaka this evening.

Emphasising the importance of democratic norms, he called for an environment where opposition members could speak freely in the parliament and contribute meaningfully to national governance.

“A healthy parliamentary culture, where both the government and the opposition perform their roles properly, is essential, as seen in democratic countries,” he said.

He also stressed the need to strengthen law and order, restore social discipline, protect citizens’ rights, and dismantle syndicates affecting people’s lives.

Paying tribute to those killed or injured during the July Uprising, he said, “If we forget the reasons behind July, such a situation may return.”

Drawing on the country’s political history, including the events surrounding 1947, the 1970 election, and the Liberation War, he said failures in accountable governance had previously led to discrimination and conflict.

“Both the government and opposition must act responsibly to avoid repeating those mistakes,” he added.

Shafiqur said collective sincerity could help establish institutional stability in democracy.

He also thanked voters and supporters and reaffirmed Jamaat’s commitment to fulfilling its promises, regardless of electoral outcomes.

In a post on his verified Facebook page at 8:40pm after the meeting, he wrote that the nation was waiting to see how a new era of parliamentary politics would unfold.

Congratulating citizens for participating in the election, he added, “Now begins the struggle to restore the people’s looted rights.”
