Ruling Awami League MP Golam Maula Rony has been released from the Kashimpur jail, 53 days after he was incarcerated for allegedly assaulting journalists.
He walked out of the Dhaka Central Jail-2 in Gazipur at around 11:12am on Monday.
“Things that I learned in jail will be useful in the future,” he told journalists outside the prison.
The High Court had given him bail in three cases over the assault on Sep 10.
Prison Supervisor Md Jahangir Hossain said they had released the ruling party MP after scrutinising the bail documents.
His wife ‘Kamrunnahar’, son ‘Risat’, younger brothers Shahidul Hasan Kabir, Golam Zilani and relatives greeted him at the jail gate.
The court had issued a ruling asking why Rony should not be given bail. He had been granted interim bail until the rule was resolved.
Rony was kept at the first floor of the prison’s VIP cell at Surma building. BNP-leaning Bengali language daily Amar Desh’s Acting Editor Mahmudur Rahman, businessman Gias Al Mamun, Jamaat-e-Islami leaders Mir Quaser Ali and ATM Azharul Islam are also lodged in the same building.
At the jail gate, Rony said: “There are three cases against me which are under trial. I have faith on the court and that’s why I’ll refrain from commenting on a sub-judice matter.”
He started for Dhaka in a car that carried a sticker of MP.
Two journalists of private channel Independent TV came under attack at Rony’s Meherba Plaza office on Topkhana Road on July 20 when they went there to interview him for their investigative programme ‘Talash’.
The video footage captured by the journalists showed Rony attacking and kicking the two journalists.
The channel’s management filed a case that day against the Patuakhali-3 MP.
Rony had secured bail after surrendering to a court, but another court on July 25 scrapped his bail and ordered his arrest after the TV management lodged a general diary saying the ruling party MP had threatened the journalists.
Police arrested and produced him before the court where his bail plea was rejected and Rony was sent to jail.
After his bail plea was rejected at the Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court, Rony on July 28 appealed to the Judge’s court for bail. But that was rejected too.
He was elected MP from the Patuakhali-3 (Golachipa-Doshmina) seat in the 2008 national polls. Rony had earlier been accused of assaulting journalists.
