The BNP has claimed that the Awami League renegade Jahangir Alam withdrew from race for Gazipur City Mayor as the Prime Minister influenced him in breach of the electoral code of conduct.
“We’ve been informed that Jahangir Alam withdrew his candidacy at the Prime Minister’s interference yesterday. We think this is a direct interference in the electoral code of conduct and this is tantamount to contempt of court,” BNP Standing Committee Member ASM Hannan Shah said.
The former Gazipur MP was speaking at a press conference on Wednesday.
Jahangir decided to withdraw from the maiden election following a lengthy meeting with Prime Minister and party President Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday night.
The Awami League leadership is viewing the upcoming city corporation election as a means to recover after its massive defeat in polls at four city corporations on June 15.
Voting for the newly created city corporation is due on July 6.
The Awami League has nominated Azmat Ullah Khan for the election.
