Pakistan has asked a Bangladeshi diplomat to leave the country in retaliation of expulsion of a Pak diplomat from Dhaka in December.

The Bangladeshi diplomat, Maushumi Rahman, is Counsellor (Political) and Head of Chancery in Islamabad, has been given till Thursday to leave the country.

A senior official of the foreign ministry said Bangladesh High Commissioner to Pakistan Sohrab Hosain Tuesday afternoon went to the Pakistan Foreign Ministry as he was asked by the ministry and met its SAARC and South Asia Director General Mohammad Faisal there.

Faisal verbally conveyed the message about the withdrawal of Mausumi from the mission, the official said.

Another senior official of the foreign ministry said Maushumi has been transferred to Portugal and she will be joining there.

“When we asked the Pakistan diplomat to leave Bangladesh, we anticipated that there would be retaliation and we worked out her next posting in December,” he said adding, “She did a good job there and that’s why she got a good posting.”

Bangladesh in the third week of December informally asked the Pakistan High Commission to withdraw its diplomat Faeena Arshad and she was withdrawn and went back to Pakistan on December 23.

The bilateral relationship between Bangladesh and Pakistan has reached its low in the recent period.

After the execution of War criminals Salahuddin Quader Chowdhury and Ali Ahsan Mohammad Muzahid, Pakistan issued a statement, which Bangladesh strongly protested and summoned Pakistan High Commissioner to Bangladesh Shuja Alam to hand over a formal communication.

Pakistan in retaliation summoned Acting Bangladesh High Commissioner, Mausumi, and protested Bangladesh’s protest.

The recent diplomatic row started when the Pakistani diplomat Faeena Arshad was put under observation by different intelligence agencies for the last one year.

She had dubious activities and the government wanted to have concrete evidence against her.

Arshad worked in Bangladesh for almost three years.

January last year another Pakistan high commission official Mohammad Mazhar Khan was caught red handed with fake currency and instructed to leave the country officially.
