The inward remittance to Bangladesh during the last month of August totaled US$ 1,008.20 million, down from $ 1,238.96 million in July.
According to Bangladesh Bank data, of the total remitted amount in August, the highest $652.45 million came through the private commercial banks. This was followed by $330.04 million through four state-owned commercial banks, $10.71 million through two specialized banks and $15.00 million through foreign commercial banks operating in Bangladesh.
Analyzing the Bangladesh Bank data, it was found that the highest amount of $265.99 million came through Islami Bank Bangladesh Ltd.; followed by $116.69 million through Agrani Bank Ltd.; $100.51 million through Sonali Bank Ltd.; $103.35 million through Janata Bank Ltd.; $ 55.29 million through National Bank Ltd.; $45.32 million through Uttara Bank Ltd.; $35.55 million through BRAC Bank Ltd.; and $22.91 million through Bank Asia Ltd.
Meanwhile, overall inward remittance in the last fiscal (2012-13) totaled $14,461.14 million.
Of the total amount remitted to Bangladesh during the last fiscal, $1,058.24 million came in June; $1,087.19 million in May; and $1,194.40 million in April; $1,229.36 million in March; $1,163.18 million in February; and $1,326.99 million in January this year while $1,287.31 in December 2012; $1,102.15 million in November; $1,453.69 million in October; $1,178.83 million in September; $1,178.65 million in August; and $1,201.15 million in July.
Country’s remittance inflow totaled $ 12,843.43 million in fiscal 2011-12 compared to $ 11,650.31 million in the previous fiscal (2010-11).
According to Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Engr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain’s statement in Parliament on February 3 this year, nearly 8.5 million Bangladeshi workers are employed in 157 countries across the globe.
