A freedom fighter committed suicide after he had been forced to leave a mosque over a conflict with its managing committee in Muradnagar upazila on Sunday.
The deceased was identified as Quazi Abul Hossain, 65, son of late Ibrahim Khalil of Khuruil village in the upazila.
Victim’s son Billal Hossain lodged a case against five people, including treasurer of the mosque committee, with Muradnagar Police Station in connection with the incident.
Police and locals said Abul Hossain strongly protested when members of managing committee of Baitul Aman Jam’e-Mosque and Madrasah were forcibly taking earth from his land.
Seeking compensation, he also lodged a complaint with Muradnagar police.
Finding the allegation to be true, police asked the mosque committee to stop cutting earth.
As the freedom fighter went to the mosque to say his Asr prayers on Sunday, treasurer of the mosque committee Monir Hossain, Mohsin, Noman, Rahim and Monir Miah did not allow him to say prayers and instead forced him to leave the worship place.
Failing to bear the insult, Abul Hossain took poison in the same afternoon.
Later, he was rushed to Comilla Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
Nazim Uddin, officer-in-charge of Muradnagar, said they were trying to nab those incited Abul Hossain to commit suicide.
