The Bangladesh government has signed a deal with two Indian contractor companies to build the Tk 5.67 billion second railway bridge over the Meghna river at Bhairab.
The 982.20 metre-long bridge will be built from the $1 billion Indian line of credit.
The agreement between the government and Indian companies IRCON International and AFCONS Infrastructure Limited was signed on Tuesday morning at Rail Bhaban.
Yogesh Kumar Misra, General Manager of the IRCON-AFCONS joint venture, and Bangladesh Railway General Manager Md Mozammel Haque signed the agreements at the function.
Railway Minister Md Mazibul Hoque, Railway Secretary Abul Kalam Azad, Indian High Commissioner Pankaj Saran and top officials of the both countries were also present at the signing ceremony.
According to the deal, the bridge’s construction work will end in 30 months at a cost of Tk 5.67 billion.
The Railway Minister at the programme said the second Bhairab bridge will maintain communication between Kishoreganj and Brahmanbaria.
Travel would become easier and faster after the work ends on different sections on the Dhaka-Chittagong railroute as it would be converted into a double-line one, Hoque said.
