An Indian girl named Malavath Purna, 13, on Saturday became the youngest female mountain climber to climb Mount Everest.

She was joined by a ninth grade student, Sadhanpalli Anand Kumar, 16, who hails from the Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh. Both the climbers are students at the Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Education Society.

The society had initially selected 150 children to participate in adventure sports. The two who were chosen made a 52-day long expedition to the top of Everest, with Purna becoming the youngest female climber in history to have accomplished this feat.

From amongst the 150 children gathered, twenty were sent to Darjeeling to train at a mountaineering institute and another nine were sent to the Indo-China border on an expedition. The two students who displayed the most resilience and toughness were sent to the Everest Expedition.

Officials have announced that the students are now returning to base camp.
