The Indian Coast Guard has announced the seizure of two Bangladeshi fishing trawlers carrying 78 crews, sharing details and images on its official social media page.
A day after the seizure, the official Facebook page and X handle, formerly Twitter, of the Indian Coast Guard shared three photographs on Tuesday night.
One image shows the detained crews kneeling on the deck of a trawler, with hands positioned behind their heads. The other two photos capture the trawlers seized by the Indian Coast Guard.
A post on the Indian Coast Guard’s official Facebook page said, ‘In a swift operation, the Indian Coast Guard apprehended two Bangladeshi fishing trawlers along with 78 crew members for unauthorised fishing in Indian waters. The vessels have been brought to Paradip for legal proceedings.’
The seized vessels have been identified as FV Meghna-5, owned by C&A Agro Limited of Chattogram, and FV Laila-2, owned by SR Fishing.
Suman Sen, executive director of C&A Agro Limited, said that FB Meghna-5 departed from Chattogram on November 24 for fishing in Khulna and was scheduled to return on December 14.
FV Laila-2 also left Chattogram on November 27 and was expected to return in the last week of December.
‘This morning, we contacted the sailors of the fishing trawlers via satellite phone. They confirmed that they would be taken ashore in the nearby area,’ Suman said.
He said that both trawlers were seized on allegations of illegally crossing into Indian waters.
Following the incident, the owners notified Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Marine Fisheries Academy, and the Department of Shipping of the incident.
