The Indian high commission in Bangladesh has said in a multi-party democracy like Bangladesh, political differences should be resolved through dialogue and peaceful means.
“This (dialogue) will strengthen democratic institutions and contribute to the realisation of the goals of peace, stability and development in Bangladesh,” the high commission said in a statement today.
However, the statement said the people of Bangladesh hold the power to decide their own future, whereas India only supports holding of free and fair elections here.
Amid sharp political differences in Bangladesh over the government system under which the next general polls would be held, this is the first official statement by India, Bangladesh’s largest neighbour in South Asia.
