ICT computer seized over ‘verdict leak’

Plainclothes police on Thursday seized the computer on which the verdict delivered by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 against BNP leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury was drafted.

Detective Branch (DB) of police sources said they seized the computer in the afternoon to track down those involved in the ‘verdict leak plot’.

ICT-1 on Tuesday sentenced BNP standing committee member Salauddin Quader Chowdhury to death after finding him guilty of committing crimes against humanity and genocide during the 1971 Liberation War.

But, the verdict without containing the court observation and judgment got posted on different websites much ahead of its pronouncement.

Showing copies of the verdict collected from the websites, Salauddin’s wife claimed that the judgment against her husband was dictated and he was denied justice.

She also said that the verdict circulated on the websites was originated from the Law Ministry.

Turning down the allegation, State Minister for Law Quamrul Islam on Tuesday said, “It’s clear that a section is hatching conspiracies to make the verdict questionable both at home and abroad.”

Quamrul, however, said: “We’ve already informed the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) to look into the allegation.”

Later on Wednesday, International Crimes Tribunal Registrar Nasir Uddin Mahmud filed a General Diary (GD) with Shahbagh Police Station over the alleged leak of the verdict.

Following the GD, DB police talked to those involved in composing the draft of the verdict on the computer.

However, no one was arrested in this connection.
