I used to steal uncle Russell’s toys: Joy

Then just a four-year-old kid, Sajeeb Wazed Joy was lucky to have escaped the August 15, 1975 bloodbath. The loss 38 years ago is definitely too heavy to bear for him. But as the whole nation mourns the loss, Joy still recalls the fond memories with Sheikh Russell, his uncle who was also brutally killed with his father, Bangbandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, on that day.

“One of my earliest memories is of annoying my Uncle Russell,” Joy wrote on his Facebook page Thursday morning, recalling those days.

“He was only a few years older than me and I would steal one of his toys and run and hide behind by Nani. He would chase me and my Nani would scold him, making him cry.

“I was 4 years old and he was 10,” wrote joy, whose mother Sheikh Hasina is currently the prime minister of the country.

Joy recalled other family members who were murdered that day: his grandfather Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, his grandmother Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, uncles and their wives.

Joy also took a dig at BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia for celebrating her birthday on August 15, the National Mourning Day.

“It is also really sad that Khaleda Zia choses to spend her birthday on this day every year,” he wrote in the Facebook post.

The US-based son of Hasina was critical that Khaleda “has several different birthdays listed on various official documents, none of which is August 15th”.

“What kind of person does this?”
