The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested 37 foreigners and two Bangladeshis with a huge cache of illegal VoIP instruments from a house in capital Dhaka’s Uttara.
The elite crime-busters raided the six-storey building on Road no. 28 at Uttara’s sector no. 12 on Sunday night, said RAB-1 Commander Kismat Hayat.
He told bdnews24.com: “The arrestees had rented the entire building to run illegal VoIP business. Thirty-two of the foreigners are Taiwanese and five others are Chinese.”
All of them confessed to their crime in preliminary questioning, he added.
Hayat could not say how many VoIP instruments had been seized or what their market value was.
However, RAB officials suspect at least Tk 100 million worth of instruments have been seized.
Hayat was speaking to bdnews24.com around 10pm during the raid being conducted on a tip-off.
“We will brief the media after the raid ends,” he added.
The RAB official said the arrestees would be handed in to police.
Hayat, however, told bdnews24.com they had come to know the building’s owner lived in Mirpur.
But he declined to be drawn into details since investigations were ongoing.
