Traffic-jam

The journey of Eid holidaymakers became unpleasant and tough on three key highways mainly due to heavy rush of vehicles, readymade garment workers’ agitation and an accident ahead of Eid-ul-Ahza, the second largest religious festival of the Muslims.

Three major highways — Dhaka-Mymensingh, Dhaka-Tangail and Dhaka-Aricha — are overwhelmed with vehicles leading to the gridlocks, taking a serious toll on the home-goers leaving the capital

The vehicles are not exactly got stuck on the highways but are moving very slowly, reports our correspondents from the highways.

DHAKA-TANGAIL HIGHWAY

Thousands of homebound people remain almost stranded on the highway due to a 40-kilometre congestion from Chandra of Gazipur to Bangabandhu bridge in Tangail, said Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Gorai Highway Police Station Jobaidul Alam.

The vehicles, which have been leaving Dhaka, are moving very slowly, resulting the tailback on the left lane of the highway which later spread to Ashulia.

Our Gazipur and Ashulia correspondent that the right lane that led to Dhaka saw a huge traffic jam following a chase and counter case between police and workers of Liberty Fashion Wear Limited at Zirani Bazar in Ashulia.

The chase and counter-chase took place when the workers, who have been demanding arrears and Eid bonus, tried to block the highway, said Abdus Sattar, deputy assistant director of Industrial Police.

Police charged batons on the workers and lobbed teargas shells to bring the situation under control, he said.

Transport movement on the highway remained suspended for 20 minutes, leading to congestion from Chandra to Mirzapur upazila of Tangail, he added.

DHAKA-MYMENSIGH HIGHWAY

A 15-km tailback has been created from Tongi to Chandra of Gazipur since 6am due to heavy pressure of vehicle, reports our Gazipur correspondent quoting Iqbal Hossain, a sergeant of Naojor highway outpost.

DHAKA-ARICHA HIGHWAY

The highway is witnessing a 20-kilometre jam as locals blocked a road in front of Saturia bus stand of Manikganj after a CNG-run bus caught fire around 10:00am.

No one was reported injured in the fire.

Reason behind the flame could not be known immediately.
