Students of Home Economics College blocked Nilkhet intersection this morning in pursuit of their demand to recognise the college as an institute of Dhaka University.
The demonstration that ensued from around 9:30am caused a gridlock on the busy road in New Market and adjoining areas since morning.
Ramna division police Deputy Commissioner Maruf Hossain Sardar told The Daily Star that lawmen were requesting the students to leave the streets.
The students of all-girls Home Economics College have been demonstrating for some time over this demand. They have, several times, blocked roads in a bid to press the government.
Their other demands include autonomy of the college, transport and library facilities, quality education, proper accommodation and appointing adequate number of teachers.
The students have been demonstrating in this regard for more than eight years.
