They’ll hold talks with govt, owners
A four-member high-profile delegation of the International Labor Organization (ILO), led by its Deputy Director General (DDG) for Field Operations and Partnerships, Gilbert Fossoun Houngbo, arrives here on Wednesday to discuss labour issues with the authorities concerned.
The delegation will visit Savar building collapse site and hold talks with the government officials and the owners of the factories during their four-day visit.
“It’s a very important visit and this is a very high-level delegation. What ILO says it’s an urgent visit following the Savar tragedy,” President of Bangladesh Employers’ Federation (BEF) M Fazlul Hoque told reporters at a press conference at the MCCI conference room on Monday.
The BEF arranged the press conference over the Savar building collapse. Secretary General of Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) Farooq Ahmed and Pubali Jute Mills Ltd Chairman and Managing Director Kamran T Rahman were also present.
Hoque, also former President of Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BKMEA), said they received a message from the ILO Director General today regarding the visit.
He said the delegation will hold a meeting with the owners of the factories and leaders of the BGMEA and BKMEA on Friday afternoon at the MCCI conference room.
Reading out part of the message, Farooq Ahmed said the delegation is coming to ‘discuss with the government of Bangladesh about how the ILO can assist the country in improving working conditions and occupational safety and health-related issues in the country to prevent occurrence of such incident in the future.’
Some 381 bodies were recovered from the debris of the Rana Plaza as of Monday noon as the death toll from the tragedy continues to go up.
Of the bodies, 370 were handed over to their relatives. Besides, some 2,444 people were rescued alive from the rubble of the building.
