Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Sunday said those who are attacking the police have ‘hidden agenda’ besides hampering the war crimes trial.
She made the comment at the meeting of the Awami League’s Victory Day Celebration Committee at Ganabhaban in the evening. She also said starting the trial against alleged war criminals was one of the major achievements of her government.
“They are conspiring in many ways. They will not leave (any chance). They are making guerrilla attacks. They are swooping on the police. They have a hidden agenda,” Hasina said.
She urged all to remain aware of the fact and resist those from achieving what they want.
On Nov 5, over 100 people, including several police officials, were injured when the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir had fought a pitched battle with them in the city’s Motijheel. The Jamaat supporters had also torched eight vehicles and motorcycles during the clash. Similar incidents of violence by Jamaat and Shibir activists have taken place in parts of the country.
The motorcade of Law Minister also came under attack at Karwan Bazar. Another policeman was set afire at Joypurhat by Shibir activists.
The incidents have so far left over 150 injured.
“It will increase the confidence of the people if the war criminals are tried. The country will improve economically,” said Hasina.
She urged all to present the real history of the independence of Bangladesh.
“A nation cannot develop unless they are confident. We will not let the sacrifices made for the independence go in vain,” she added.
Hasina is the chief of the Victory Day Celebration Committee and the party’s Executive Committee’s Member Mohammad Nasim is its Chief Coordinator.
Responding to the opposition leader Khaleda Zia’s speech identifying the Prime Minister , her sister Shekh Rehana and son-in-law corrupt, Hasina said, “Money laundered by her son was brought back home from Singapore the day after Khaleda made the comment.”
Khaleda made the comment at the rally in Barisal.
Hasina said the incident was not to humiliate Khaleda and her family at all because it tarnished the image of the country in international arena.
The Awami League will observe a month-long programme from Dec 3 celebrating the Victory Day. The Prime Minister will inaugurate the programme.
The Victory Day Celebration Committee will have a stage erected at the Suhrawardi Uddan for the celebrations.
Nasim briefed journalists about the programme after the meeting.
