BNP standing committee member barrister Moudud Ahmed on Saturday said the High Court verdict declaring Jamaat’s registration illegal will not cast any negative impact on the unity of the 18-party alliance.
“This verdict won’t have any negative impact on our alliance. Our unity was there, still intact, and it’ll remain so in the future,” he told a protest rally.
Moudud also said Jamaat will have no bar towards its participation in the next general election as the HC verdict will remain stayed during hearing of the appeal filed by the Islamist party with the Appellate Division.
On Thursday, the High Court declared illegal the registration of Jamaat-e-Islami as a political party.
A larger HC bench, headed by Justice M Moazzam Husain, delivered the judgment on a writ petition in the form of public interest litigation challenging the validity of the Election Commission decision that had given registration to Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami (BJI) as a political party in 2008.
United democratic front arranged the programme at the Jatiya Press Club protesting the indecent remarks against BNP senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman by the Prime Minister and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.
Moudud questioned the neutrality of the Election Commission for its recent move to amend the electoral laws without consultation with the political parties.
“The Election Commission has to be reconstituted in consultation with all political parties after Eid as the current commission become controversial,” he added.
He alleged that the commission is trying to give registration to a baseless party only to create confusion about BNP.
The BNP leader said apart from restoration of the caretaker government, the EC must be reconstituted for ensuring a free, fair and neutral election.
Moudud welcomed Prime Minister’s son Sajeeb Wazed Joy in politics but criticised him for making disparaging remarks against Tarique Rahman.
“Joy’ recent activities have given an impression that he is coming to politics. We welcome him,” he said.
Protesting Joy’s comment involving Tarique in the August-21 grenade attack, Moudud said the Prime Minister’s son made him controversial by making indecent remarks against Tarique and claiming to have information about Awami League’s return to power.
Claiming Tarique is much ahead of Joy in politics, the BNP leader said people will choose the BNP senior vice chairman if there is any competition between Tarique and Joy.
