The High Court on Tuesday stayed the government order of suspensions of Rajshahi City Corporation mayor Md Mosaddek Hossain and Habiganj municipality mayor GK Gaus.
The court also asked the government to explain why the order of suspensions issued by the local government division on April 2, would not be declared illegal.
The High Court asked the government to explain why a provision of the Local Government (City Corporation) Law 2009, which empowers the government to suspend mayors and councilors once trial court accepts charge sheet of criminal cases they face.
The bench of Justice Syed Mohammad Dastagir Hossain and Justice Md Ataur Rahman Khan passed the order after hearing separate petitions filed by the duo.
They filed the petitions challenging their suspensions soon after they took charge as mayors following a previous order of the High Court regarding their first suspension orders.
