HC orders disposal of bail pleas of Abbas, Anee in 15 days

Mirza Abbas and Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee.

The High Court on Sunday asked the Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court to accept and dispose of in 15 days bail petitions of the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders, Mirza Abbas and Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee, in separate cases relating to October 28, 2023 violence in the capital.

The bench of Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah issued the directive after hearing separate writ petitions filed by Abbas and Annie.

The High Court asked the CMM court to accept bail prayers of Mirza Abbas in 10 cases filed with the Ramna, Paltan and Dhaka railway police stations.

Another High Court bench was constituted to hear Abbas’ bail prayer in another case relating to the  attack on the house of the chief justice during the party October 28, 2023 grand rally.

The HC asked the CMM court to accept bail prayers of Annie in two cases filed against Annie with the New Market and the Dhanmondi police stations.

Their lawyers, Zainul Abedin and Sagir Hossain Leon, told the High Court that the CMM court refused to accept bail prayers of Abbas in the 10 cases and Annie in two cases though they were  made accused in the cases.

Zainul said that the police did not pray to magistrates to show them arrested in pending cases in order to linger the process of filing bail prayers by the opposition leaders.

Abbas and Annie were arrested in one of the total 11 cases in the period between October 28 and November 1, relating to violence during the October 28 rally.

A total of 71 BNP leaders, mostly senior leaders, including the party secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, were made accused in the cases.

Zainul Abedin said that the senior leaders got bail in many of the cases, except for the one relating to the attack on the house of the chief justice.
