Accusing the government of resorting to a repressive policy to cling to power, BNP spokesman Mirza Fakhrul Islam on Monday said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s name will be there on the list of the world’s most-hated rulers.
“The party which had been established under the leadership of Majloom Jononeta (leader of the oppressed) Maulana Abdul Hamid Khan Bhashani, 65 years later its president’s name will be there on the list of the most-hated rulers of the world,” he told a seminar.
G-9, a pro-BNP research organisation, arranged the programme at a city hotel. BNP chairperson’s press secretary Maruf Kamal Khan presented the keynote paper at the seminar.
The BNP acting secretary said the government has inflicted inhuman repression and torture on the country’s people to illegally stay in office. “The present Awami League has become more dangerous than that of the 1972-75 one.”
“They (AL) hold autocratic thoughts and want to annihilate those who oppose them. They want to do whatever they like and no one will raise their voice against it,” he said.
The BNP leader said Awami League is a party which had killed itself by establishing one-party Baksal rule in 1975. “It’s Ziaur Rahman who had revived Awami League by introducing multi-party democracy though they call him a military ruler.”
He came down hard on the ruling party leaders for what he said supporting the extrajudicial killing, saying it is unfortunate that the party which had started its journey 65 years back to protect democracy is now backing extrajudicial killings.
“Awami League general secretary Syed Ashraful Islam has said the extrajudicial killings had been carried out in the past and will also take place in the future, while Prime Minister’s adviser HT Imam has said extrajudicial killings are not a big problem. These are very unbecoming remarks,” the BNP leader added.
Fakhrul alleged that a tyrannical force has illegally grabbed state power and resorted to suppressive and repressive policy to cling to power.
He said there is no alternative to waging a strong movement by uniting the entire nation to get rid of the misrule of the current regime.

I am certain Hasina will top the list of hated rulers. But who is to blame for this? My question to the people of Bangladesh, why did they vote her to power the second time after her repressive rule during her first tenure (1996-2001)! Why the opposition parties cannot unite to overthrow her government? Why law enforcement branches of the government cross boundaries of humanity to suppress peoples’ democratic rights just to fulfill Hasina’s brutal personal whim? If the answer is ‘greed’, then Hasina has the right to stay in power and torture the people of Bangladesh.
I completely agree with nh1 – indeed, in case the people of Bangladesh wishes to prove nh1 wrong, they must unite and kick the shit out of this woman and her gang of goons and throw them out once and for all!
