Despite the local leaders’ repeated calls for announcement on her son Sajeeb Wajed Joy’s entry into politics, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina did not say anything about it as she addressed a political rally in Rangpur Wednesday.

Joy, who also accompanied his mother to the northern district, also addressed the rally and urged the people to reelect Awami League through the next parliamentary election to maintain the “development momentum initiated during the current regime”.

Thousands of people from neighbouring districts including Kurigram, Gaibandha, Nilphamari and Dinajpur thronged the Pirganj Government High School ground in Pirganj upazila to listen to the PM in the afternoon.

Addressing the rally, Hasina alleged that the Jamaat men are carrying out smear campaigns against the AL.

She asked leaders and activists of her party and religious scholars to alert people against anti-AL propaganda.

“No Muslim can burn Quran, set fire to mosques. But Jamaat-e-Islami, BNP and Hefajat have jointly burnt hundreds of Qurans at the Baitul Mokarram National Mosque,” she said.

She also sought blessings of people through their votes so that her government can go to power and continue with the development works.

The PM, along with her son Joy and daughter Saima Wazed Putul, earlier visited their home at Pirganj upazila and offered special prayers at the grave of Dr Wazed Miah, Hasina’s husband who died in May, 2009.

In his maiden public address, Joy pledged that the AL will seek a permanent solution to Monga (seasonal and localised famine) in the area if it voted to power again.
