Hartal ends at 4pm as Jamaat cuts it short

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on Thursday cut short its countrywide daylong shutdown by two hours because of Hindus Rath Jatra festival.

In a statement, Jamaat acting secretary general Rafiqul Islam Khan said his party will observe the shutdown until 4pm instead of 6pm.

He said they cut the hartal short by two hours to facilitate the Hindu Community’s Rath Jatra festival following a request by them.

The daylong nationwide hartal, the fourth in a row, called by Jamaat-e-Islami, began at 6am today (Thursday) in protest against the ICT-2 verdict against its secretary general Ali Ahsan Muhammad Mujahid.

The International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Wednesday handed down capital punishment to Mujahid for committing crimes against humanity during the 1971 Liberation War.
