An Awami League leader has criticised BNP chief Khaleda Zia’s announcement of a post-Eid movement, saying such move is bereft of any vision.
What would Khaleda Zia intend to achieve from the movement she threatened to launch after Eid, he has asked.
“As head of a political party you are free to announce any programme,” said Mahbubul-Ul-Alam Hanif while speaking at a discussion in Dhaka on Thursday.
“But what are you aiming at?” asked the ruling party’s joint general secretary. “Every political party has a specific vision. What is yours?”
“What kind of programme are you planning?”
Khaleda Zia reiterated her party’s decision to launch fresh programmes after Eid while addressing an Iftar hosted by her alliance partner Jamaat-e-Islami on Wednesday.
“We will start a fresh movement after Eid. I urge all parties to forget their differences and unite to save the country.”
BNP, formerly the main opposition, sat out the 10th national election in January after ruling Awami League rejected its long-standing demand to conduct the polls under a ‘neutral government’.
The deadlock continued and the run up to the Jan 5 polls was marred by violent opposition strikes and blockades.
Awami League returned to power for another term and Jatiya Party replaced the BNP as main Opposition in Parliament. BNP since then has been terming Sheikh Hasina’s government ‘illegal’.
“There is no point hitting the government with another movement,” said Hanif, “You won’t get anything from it.”
“Your movement will only cause more suffering to the people like it did during last year”
The Awami League leader drew attention to the BNP chief’s presence at Jamaat’s programme saying: “You said, time and again, that your party is allied with Jamaat only for poll purposes. If it’s so why did you go to their Iftar? Is there an election in the country?
“Your son Tarique (Rahman) once said your student fronts –(Bangladesh) Chhatra Dal and (Islami Chhatra) Shibir – are like brothers. You proved him right by attending Jamaat’s Iftar yesterday.”
