BNP standing committee member Moudud Ahmed yesterday asked the government to hand over the charges to the newly elected mayors and councillors of four city corporations immediately.
He made the comments as the government said the new mayors, who were sworn in at Prime Minister’s Office Sunday, would take office after terms of their predecessors ended.
None of the previous four mayors’ five-year tenure will end until at least one month later, said a new mayor.
Moudud yesterday paid homage to former president Ziaur Rahman at his grave in the capital with the four new mayors–Ariful Haque Chowdhury of Sylhet, M Moniruzzaman Moni of Khulna, Ahsan Habib Kamal of Barisal, Mosaddek Hossain Bulbul of Rajshahi. He, however, said, “The BNP is happy, as the prime minister administrated the oath to the mayors.”
Secretary to the Local Government Division Abu Alam Md Shaheed Khan said handing over charges to the new mayors before end of the previous mayors’ tenures would be a violation of the City Corporation Act 2009.
