Grameenphone (GP) says it will provide free Facebook browsing for its customers starting from Sep 15.
Bangladesh’s leading mobile-phone operator’s Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) Allan Bonke announced the offer in a press conference at a Dhaka hotel on Sunday.
He said, “Free Facebook browsing will be active for any data pack subscription starting from September 15, 2014 until further notice.”
Customers would be able to access the popular social network site without any data charge from 12am to 6pm every day, on all devices, he said.
No specific registration or opt-in would be required to avail the service.
The offer is part of attaining the goal of ‘Internet for All’
“Grameenphone is approaching the significant milestone of 5 crore customers in Bangladesh. In the run up to this occasion we want our customers to enjoy free browsing of the most popular social media platform in the world,” Allan said.
More than 110 million people have mobile phone in Bangladesh and many of them are using internet.
Despite the gradual rise of internet use, a large number of people are in the dark about the colossal benefits that internet can bring to their lives.
“We believe there is no reason why anyone who has a voice connection cannot also be connected to the internet,” added Bonke.
In response to a query, Allan said GP currently has 7 million internet users.
Senior officials of GP were also present in the press conference.
