The government will conduct the country’s 3rd Slum Census 2014 and counting of floating people programme from April 25 next to figure out the number of slums, households in the slums and overall slum population in the country.

Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) will conduct the Slum Census 2014 in all the city corporations, pourashavas and upazila headquarters of the country from April 25 to May 2, 2014, said officials at the BBS.

The major objectives of the Slum Census 2014 are also to number the total population of the slums in respect of their age and gender; determining the socioeconomic conditions of the slum dwellers as well as their demographic characteristics; identifying the basic and major reasons of their living in slums; determining how many people come to the slums from which district; collecting data on landlessness of the slum dwellers; collecting other related information about the accommodation of the slum dwellers alongside collecting education, profession and environment related information of the slum dwellers.

Among the special features of the Slum Census, digitized GIS map will be used while computer–based database will be built after determining the overall number of slum population in respect of the number of slums, households, age and gender. The database of the slum dwellers will also be archived.

The questionnaire of the main slum census will consist of 39 questions having two modules. The number one module will be related to household, facilities of the households and accommodations while the number two module will be related to personal characteristics and individuals of the household.

The BBS conducted the country’s first slum census during 1985-86 in the four divisional cities — Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna and Rajshahi. The 2nd slum census was conducted in 1997 in all the town areas.

Meanwhile, State Minister for Finance and Planning MA Mannan on Thursday inaugurated the field-level officers’ conference of the BBS, the refreshers training of the MSVSB project and the training activities of the upcoming Slum Census and floating people count 2014.

Informatics and Statistics Division Secretary M Nojibur Rahman presided over the function held at the BBS auditorium. BBS Director General Golam Mostafa Kamal was present.

Speaking as the chief guest, State Minister MA Mannan said that without a reliable statistical base, the government would not be able to undertake any plan.

He said the aim of the government is not only to ensure economic growth, but also to ensure growth with equity for all individuals.
