BNP senior leader Gayeshwar Chandra Roy on Tuesday said they will realise their demand for holding a fresh election through a movement if the government does not accept it through talks.
“Our leader (Khaleda) has urged the government to sit in dialogue, but people won’t remain silent …they’ll take to the streets if the government tries to buy time in the name of talks,” he said.
Gayeshwar, also a BNP standing committee member, was addressing a discussion at Dhakeshwari temple prior to a payer session seeking the eternal peace of BNP founder and former president Ziaur Rahman.
Hindu-Buddhist-Christian Kalyan Front arranged the programme, marking the 33rd death anniversary of Ziaur Rahman.
Gayeshwar said the people of the country and the international community want a free, fair and inclusive election to be held very soon in Bangladesh as the current regime is not elected with people’s votes.
“People want a free and fair election like India’s one to be held in Bangladesh to establish a pro-people government,” he added.
The BNP leader criticised the ruling party leaders for what he said making reckless remarks over the BNP chairperson’s call for a dialogue.
Terming the current regime illegal, he alleged that democracy is now in exile in the country as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina rehabilitated autocracy here.
Gayeshwar alleged that the ruling party leaders being alienated from people are making unguarded remarks to keep their activists warm.
Claiming BNP as a non-communal party, he recalled BNP founder Ziaur Rahman’s role in empowering women and encouraging them to work in offices. “How a party could be communal which played a pivotal role in empowering women?” he questioned.
