BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir today said that the government would be forced to arrange a midterm national election in the force of a mass movement.

“The ruling Awami League will be forced to hold the mid-term election before 2019 in the face of mass movement,” he told reporters after placing wreaths at the grave of the party founder Ziarur Rahman in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

“Our democracy and sovereignty are on the verge of collapse. Our voting rights have already been taken away. We will wage a mass movement to ensure the midterm election before 2019,” he threatened.

Fakhrul threatened to topple the government with the mass movement.

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia along with her party’s rank and file placed wreath on the grave of Ziaur Rahman to mark the party’s National Revolution and Solidarity Day.

During a presser at Ganabhaban, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina told reporters that her government held the right to hold the next general election anytime through a democratic procedure.

In response to the statement, the BNP spokesperson had said that the government had begun to bow to the “public demand” for a general election.

In the recent times, BNP have reiterated a threat to wage a movement for an election under nonpartisan caretaker government without specifying anything. Khaleda Zia called out to party activists to “be ready” and pounce when she would make the call.
