BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday said the government will be held responsible if any unconstitutional force captures power, and urged people to stay alert.

“We don’t know why the prime minister is saying about the emergence of unconstitutional force. We want to categorically say it is the current regime that will be held responsible if any unconstitutional government,” he said.

Fakhrul was talking to reporters after placing wreaths at the mazar of BNP founder late President Ziaur Rahman along with newly elected mayor of Gazipur City Corporation MA Mannan.

The BNP spokesperson urged people to remain alert so that no unconstitutional force can capture power taking advantage of the political situation.

Earlier, on Sunday, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina administered oath to MA Mannan as the first mayor of the newly formed Gazipur City Corporation.

At the oath-taking ceremony, the premier said it is usual to have differences of opinions among parties in a multiparty democracy. “Taking advantage of the differences, any undemocratic force should never be allowed to come to power to play with people’s fate.”

About BNP’s demand for non-party election-time government, Fakhrul said, “The prime minister herself came to power though an election held under a caretaker government. Before that, three more elections were held under the non-party government system. But now they are not paying heed to the public demand.”

He said people gave mandate in favour of the non-party government in the recently held elections to city corporations and they hope that good sense will prevail upon the government to accept the demand.

“Otherwise, people will wage a strong movement against the current regime and it’ll be compelled to accept the demand,” he added.

Over the arrest of Odhikar’s secretary Adilur Rahman Khan, the BNP leader said placing a human rights activist on police remand is the manifestation the government’s undemocratic behaviour.

BNP central committee member Hasan Uddin Sarker, Jubo Dal general secretary Saiful Islam Nirab, Swechchasebak Dal general secretary Mir Sarfat Ali Sapu, Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal president Abdul Kader Bhuiyan Jewel were, among others, present during the placing of wreath at Ziaur Rahman’s mazar.
