Govt pushing country into deeper crisis: Khaleda

BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Monday alleged that the government is pushing the country’s political situation towards a deeper crisis through its increased repressive acts.

“Retaining power through a farcical election, this illegal government keeps on arresting the leaders and activists of the opposition alliance alongside killing and enforced disappearances. Even national leaders are not spared,” she said.

“We think the government is deliberately creating an anarchic situation in its evil-effort to hang onto power,” the BNP chief alleged in a statement protesting the detention of Abdul Latif Nezami, chairman of Islami Oikya Jote, a component of the BNP-led 19-party alliance.

Police had picked Nezami up from his city residence around 9:30am, but released him around 10:30am after keeping him detained in Wari Police Station for an hour.

In the statement signed by BNP joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Khaleda said the government has indulged in a deadly game triggering a panic across the country.

She said the government has created an appalling situation throughout the country by resorting to various sorts of repression, harassment, killing and detention for no reason.

Pointing at the government, the BNP chairperson said, “Return the basic rights of people and exercise restraint. Or else, you won’t be able to escape public wraths.”
