Govt, opposition have to resolve political crisis: Speaker

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury.

Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury Thursday said she would play her due role if the government and the opposition take initiative to resolve the political crisis over the next general elections inside parliament.
“As Speaker, I can facilitate if they want to hold any discussion on this issue in parliament,” she said while talking to reporters at the MP hostel of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
“It is the government and the opposition who should resolve the political crisis over how to hold the next parliamentary polls,” she added replying to a query from reporters.
The political stalemate arose mainly after the Awami League-led 18-party government abolished the non-partisan caretaker government system by amending the constitution in June 2011.
The main opposition BNP has been in movement demanding restoration of the caretaker government to oversee the next general elections due between October and January.
