BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia has claimed the government’s move to raise pass rate in public examinations to get “applause” is almost “destroying” Bangladesh’s entire education system.
At a programme on Monday night, the former prime minister said, “There’s no more cheating in examinations. They have increased the pass rate to get lauded.
“But in fact, everything is hollow inside.”
Referring to a recently concluded Dhaka University (DU) admission test in which only nine percent students passed, Khaleda wondered, “Why would a student, who got GPA-5, fail in university entry tests? Then, how did they get GPA-5?”
Over 90 percent candidates had failed to clear DU ‘Kha’ unit tests. Of them, only two were found eligible to study at the Department of English.
Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid blamed the university authority’s ‘flawed’ selection process but Khaleda blamed the government for the ‘disaster’.
“I think the government is ruining the country by increasing pass rates,” the BNP chief said. “The talented students are getting frustrated.”
Monday’s discussion was held Khaleda’s Gulshan office marking the second anniversary of sectarian violence in Cox’s Bazar’s Ramu.
Religious fanatics torched Buddhist Viharas in Ramu on Sept 29, 2012. Similar attacks took place in Teknaf and Ukhiya Upazilas the following day.
Attackers allegedly tied to BNP and Jamaat-e-Islami burned Ramu’s Sima Vihara to the ground on the pretext of a defamatory religious post on Facebook. Over 250 rare statues were destroyed and looted. Buddhist localities, too, had come under attack.
Khaleda blamed the ruling Awami League for the incidents.
“The real perpetrators are roaming free. Some even went on foreign tours with the prime minister,” she said without naming anyone.
“But those who are innocent are behind bars,” she claimed.
People of no religion can live in peace during the Awami League’s term even though they speak of secularism, alleged Khaleda, whose party is a key ally of the Jamaat-e-Islami.
She demanded the arrest and trial of RAB’s Additional Director General Col Ziaul Ahsan alleging the elite police unit was involved with murders and forced disappearances.
The former prime minister claimed all top gangsters were arrested during her government and not in the Awami League’s term.
She urged the people of all faiths to forgo their differences and forge together unity for the anti-government agitation.
“Our demonstration will be peaceful,” the BNP chief said. “We’ll drive out this illegal government through a peaceful popular movement.”
