The Awami League does not want the next general elections held under a non-partisan government because it is scared of the people, Khaleda Zia says.
At an Iftar on Thursday, the BNP Chairperson said, “The government did not do any work for the people in the last four and a half years. And now, this government is suffering from the fear of reprisal from the people.”
The opposition chief made the remarks as she renewed her demand of a non-party government system to oversee the parliamentary elections.
“The Awami League will not be allowed to go to the elections while in power. No polls under a partisan government will take place. A non-party government will oversee the next general elections and all parties will take part,” she asserted.
She claimed their demand for a non-partisan government has stuck a public chord. “We want a free and fair voting…Those elected in that election will govern the country.”
“This government did not do any good to the country. They were busy doing corruption, looting and terrorism. They will have to answer to the people someday for this.”
The former Prime Minister was speaking at the Iftar hosted by Bikalpadhara Bangladesh at the Basundhara Convention Centre in the capital.
Bikalpadhara President AQM Badruddoza Chowdhury said, “The country will be thrown into a deep crisis if the government does not meet the demand of a non-party government. There will be conflicts.”
The Iftar was attended by top leaders of BNP and ally parties and other dignitaries.
