The BNP has claimed the Awami League ‘scents victory’ in the general elections because it has ‘failed to understand the people’.
“Syed Ashraful Islam said at a programme (on Monday) that his party could sense imminent victory. People knew him as a gentleman,” party’s spokesperson Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said on Tuesday referring to the Awami League spokesman.
“It is unfortunate that he is not able to realise what the people want,” he said.
Fakhrul claimed the people had ‘rejected’ the ruling party in the last five civic polls.
“But still the likes of Syed Ashraf were scenting victories. In fact, they smelt ‘vote rigging’,” the BNP Acting Secretary General commented.
On Monday, Syed Ashraf had said his party would sweep the polls to form the next government.
As per the 15th Constitutional Amendment, the forthcoming polls will be organised by the ruling party, which, the BNP-led opposition alliance claim will not be ‘free and fair’.
The opposition had been demanding restoration of the caretaker provision to oversee the national polls and threatened to stay away if otherwise.
Fakhrul said there were doubts whether an election would be held and blamed the government of ‘plotting to rig votes’.
He took a dig at the Election Commission, which, he said, was constituted with worthless and ineligible persons.
“They have curbed their power themselves,” he said referring to the EC’s decision to relinquish power to cancel candidacy for breach of electoral law.
