BNP leader Moudud Ahmed has alleged the government is hatching a new conspiracy to prolong its stay in power by amending the constitution.
Terming the 15th amendment to the Constitution controversial, he said on Friday, “It has also failed to serve the purpose of the government.”
Moudud, also a standing committee member of the party, has accused the government of attempting to cling to power for ever through bringing further changes to the charter.
Addressing a discussion at Dhaka Reporters Unity in the capital, he claimed the government had told that they would hold the election before dissolving the parliament; later it said it would hold the polls without dissolving the House, but both are not possible now.
“To do this, they are hatching a new conspiracy with the constitution to continue to stay in power even after finishing their tenure on January 25,” Moudud said at the discussion of the Jatiyatabadi Samabay Dal, a pro-BNP organisation.
“BNP will cancel the 15th amendment to the constitution if it is voted to power, because the 51 changes to the constitution including the scrapping of the caretaker government system made the charter controversial,” he said.
“The government has made the constitution too complicated to bring any change in future, if necessary.”
He alleged that the government has created a stigma for the constitution as the parliament has lost its power to bring changes in the charter.
About taking part in the next general election, the BNP leader reiterated that his party would not participate in the election under the present prime minister-led administration and would also resist the election by movement.
He said the government might hatch a conspiracy to bring changes in the constitution to prolong their stay in power but it would be washed away due to people’s movement
