BNP standing committee member Tariqul Islam on Wednesday alleged that the government is conspiring to arrest their party chairperson Khaleda Zia and senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman ahead of the national election.
“The government is hatching a conspiracy to arrest BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and senior vice chairman Tarique Rahman before the election by hurriedly holding the trial of false cases filed against them,” he said.
Tariqul came up with the remarks while addressing a party workers’ meeting at a city hotel.
The BNP leader said the government has released 40,000 accused of murder cases by withdrawing 7,500 cases on political consideration.
Turning to the caretaker government issue, he said Awami League, getting isolated from people, is now trying to hold a stage-managed election under its own administration on the pretext of following the Constitution.
“The Constitution isn’t like the holy Quran and Bible that it can’t be changed. There’ll be a volcano of movement after the Eid if the government doesn’t reinstate the caretaker government system in the charter through its amendment,” he warned.
The BNP policymaker also called upon the party leaders and activists to get ready for any sacrifice for forcing the government to arrange the next polls under a non-party administration.
Asking the party men to focus on the movement instead of the election, Tariqul said, “Don’t only chant slogans in favour of any candidate and create a strong resistance first against this fascist regime and then think about the election.”
Warning the party leaders, he said, “Don’t try to maintain any covert entente with the ruling party men. You can’t be leaders sitting in air-conditioned rooms. The tested party followers and those playing the active role in the movement will be evaluated in the days to come.”
