Govt broken all repression records: BNP

BNP senior leader Nazrul Islam Khan on Monday alleged that the government has broken all the previous records of repression and oppression on the country’s people in its evil effort to hang onto power by staging a drama in the name of election.

“We think the current government on the pretext of protecting the constitution is inflicting terrible oppression and repression on people, who are the owners of the country, to cling to power and return to power. They’ve broken all the previous records of persecution,” he said.

Nazrul, also a party standing committee member, came up with the allegation at a press briefing at BNP chairperson’s Gulshan office about the 18-party’s third day of the 83-hour blockade.

The BNP leader urged the government to come to the path of compromise shunning the repressive acts.

He also alleged that the government has turned Satkhira into a death valley in the name of operation by joint forces.

“Police together with joint forces and ruling party cadres are firing shots indiscriminately and killing, repressing and arresting the opposition leaders and activists across the country. Thousands of leaders and activists are now behind the bars,” the BNP spokesman lamented.

He claimed that an opposition activist was killed and over 527 others were injured by the law enforcers and ruling party men during the third day of the blockade.

Besides, Nazrul said, at least 375 opposition leaders and activists were arrested and over 2,700 others implicated in ‘false’ cases.

The BNP leader said they have seen in the newspapers that a delegation of Awami League, led by ex-Home Minister Muhiuddin Khan Alamgir, went to the Election Commission and asked the commission to drop the wealth information of the candidates from its website.

“They did it so that people can’t see the information of the vast wealth of the ruling party candidates. We’re now waiting to see whether the Commission accepts the undue plea of the ruling party,” he added.

The BNP spokesman claimed that the country’s people want the 10th parliamentary elections to be held under a non-party neutral administration with the participation of all parties. “We want to tell the government to reach a compromise to fulfil people’s hopes and aspirations.”

  1. Don’t worry BNP. You can try and beat AL’s repression records when you come to power. But then you have to participate in the election, you know. Deal….?
