Accusing the government again of carrying out mass killing, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia on Saturday urged people to take an all-out preparation to topple the current regime.
“Time has come to dislodge this government… you need to prove it with action instead of uttering words,” she said.
She camp up with the remarks while addressing a wayside rally at Machhihata union in Sadar upazila of the district.
Earlier, she visited Urshiara and Jarulata villages — the tornado-ravaged areas in the upazila — and consoled the affected people.
Khaleda, also the leader of the opposition in parliament, started her journey from her Gulshan office around 11:20 am and reached Brahmanbaria Circuit House at about 3pm.
Terming the government shameless, Khaleda said had the regime had the minimum sense of shame it would have quit long ago. “The two ears of the government are severed. So, it neither sees nor hears anything. They walk in the middle of the road. ”
She alleged that this government has destroyed the country by indulging in corruption, looting and theft, and said now no one, not even children and elderly people, is safe in its hands.
The BNP chief said killing, making people disappeared and plundering have been the main tasks of the government. “We’ll ensure the security of people by saving them from the clutch of this repressive regime,” she told the meeting.
Referring to Friday’s killings in Chapainawabganj and Sirajganj in police firing, she said people from all walks of life, including women, chased the law enforcers by forging a strong resistance with brooms and sticks in their hands.
Khaleda also accused the government of reneging on its electoral pledges and said there has been no fall in rice price over the last four years.
Turning to the distribution of relief materials in the tornado-hit areas, Khaleda alleged that the government did not distribute enough relief in the twister-stricken areas. “What the government distributed was nothing, but a show-off.
Khaleda demanded the government distribute sufficient relief, corrugated tin-sheets and cash for the reconstruction of damaged houses of the villagers and loan for the farmers.
She also urged the well-off section of society to come forward in aid of the affected people.
BNP standing committee member Abdul Moyeen Khan, adviser to the party chairperson Ukil Abdul Sattar, Education Affairs secretary Khairul Kabir Khokon, Student Affairs secretary Shahid Uddin Chowdhury Anee, among others, addressed the rally held with district unit president Harun-Al-Rashid in the chair.
On March 22, thirty-three people were killed, over 300 others injured and 500 houses were affected as a tornado lashed several villages in Sadar and Akhaura upazilas.
Earlier, on March 25, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited the areas.
