BNP on Wednesday alleged that the Liberation War Affairs Ministry and the freedom fighters were ignored in the ‘Lakho Konthe Sonar Bangla’ event held at the National Parade Square.

“The event (‘Lakho Konthe Sonar Bangla) was arranged by the government. There’ was no separate participation of political parties. But it’s a matter of regret that the Liberation War Affairs Ministry’s involvement was not visible in organising the programme. It exposed that the freedom fighters were ignored in it,” said BNP leader Nazrul Islam Khan.

He made the allegation while talking to reporters after paying tributes to BNP founder and late President Ziaur Rahman at his Sher-e-Bangla Nagar grave along with Party chief Khaleda Zia and other senior party leaders.

Asked why there was no BNP’s participation in the national event, Nazrul, also a party standing committee member, said, “No party has been asked to take part in it separately. It’s obvious where the freedom fighters and the related ministry were ignored BNP would be mistreated, too.”

The nation has created a history through a spectacular ‘Lakho Kanthe Sonar Bangla’ programme where nearly three lakh people sang the national anthem in unison at the National Parade Ground, eying to have its name in the Guinness Book of World Records.

People from all walks of life, mostly in red and green costumes, sang together the national anthem of Bangladesh, ‘Amar Sonar Bangla Ami Tomay Bhalobashi’. Although the official counting showed the number of people singing the national anthem at 2,54,681, but around 3 lakh people in and around the ground sang the national anthem.

The BNP leader said the current regime assuming office through a ‘voter-less and unilateral national election’ has destroyed democracy and the spirit of the Liberation War. “The government has got isolated from people. So, they’re taking anti-people decisions.”

Opposing the draft Toll Policy, 2014, he said the government has taken such a decision as it has no sympathy for people and responsibility to them.

Mentioning that restoring democracy and the spirit of the Liberation War is the major challenge for the nation at present, he said, “We want to take a vow standing on the grave of proclaimer of the independence, Ziaur Rahman, we’ll restore democracy and establish a pro-people government.”

Recalling the outstanding contributions of Zia and other freed fighters to the country’s Liberation War, Nazrul said, “The country had been liberated with the supreme sacrifices of the freedom fighters, who dreamt of establishing a democratic country free from exploitation. But this regime has destroyed the spirit.”
